Science
Year 1
Children in Year 1 follow the ELAN Year 1 Curriculum, which follows the National Curriculum. This teaches scientific concepts through storytelling and hands on experience. Year 2 children in the mixed Year 1/2 class follow the Year 1 Curriculum.
Years 2-6
From Year 2, we use the HEP Science scheme which follows the National Curriculum with minor adaptations (see the notes below the overview).
Rationale
At Windwhistle Primary School, through our science teaching, we want to enrich the lives of the children in our school by creating awe and wonder at the world around them. Through experiential learning, they will develop their curiosity to understand scientific concepts and processes and understand how these have been harnessed by human beings throughout history to improve civilisation. Pupils will see how their learning links to the real world and their own future potential careers as scientists.

* As a school we have changed the order of units in Year 5, as the proposed Term 2 unit, Animals including humans, includes elements of the Sex and Relationships Education curriculum that we cover in Term 6 through JIGSAW, and which require parental knowledge prior to teaching. We teach all of the units of the curriculum without omission, in the revised order.
** Whilst units are divided by term, this is an indication of the order in which they are taught rather than providing strict chronological boundaries. Terms 1 and 2 for example are often 7 weeks in length, whilst term 5 can be only 5 weeks. Lessons are therefore taught weekly, with some units being taught either side of a holiday. This structure is outlined in the Curriculum timetable overview document.
