Windwhistle pupils get hands-on gardening lesson from railway bridge team

Windwhistle Primary School pupils in Weston-super-Mare enjoyed a gardening project with teams behind the new Winterstoke Road railway bridge.
Pupils at Windwhistle Primary School in Weston-super-Mare enjoyed a special gardening session this week when representatives from Octavius Infrastructure and engineering consultancy Ramboll visited the school.

The visitors are involved in the construction and design of the new Winterstoke Road railway bridge and spent time with children developing the school’s raised beds behind the Year 3 classrooms.

As part of their community engagement work linked to the Bournville Estate, the teams joined pupils for a practical planting activity designed to encourage an interest in gardening and help children learn more about a major project taking place in their local area.

The Ramboll Foundation generously donated tomato, salad and herb plants, along with a range of gardening tools for the school. Members of the Ramboll team then worked alongside pupils to plant the vegetables and herbs in the raised beds.

Children enthusiastically took part in the activity, carefully planting and watering the new additions to the garden while learning more about how plants grow.

The visit also gave pupils the opportunity to meet some of the people responsible for designing and building the new Winterstoke Road railway bridge, helping them understand more about the engineering and construction work taking place close to their community.

Members of the Ramboll team praised the pupils for their enthusiasm and the care they showed while handling and planting the vegetables and herbs.

School leaders thanked both organisations for their support and for providing such an enjoyable and educational experience for the children.

Windwhistle Primary School is part of the Extend Learning Academies Network (ELAN), which supports schools across North Somerset and the surrounding area.

The new raised beds will continue to provide learning opportunities for pupils in the months ahead as they care for the plants and watch them grow throughout the summer.
